RUTTHNA (without the h means 'rot' in Swedish) is the bastard child of Joakim Kristensson (the drummer of THYRFING) and Dennis Ekdahl (RAISE HELL). There is no Odin-praising Viking metal like the Pagan creation Kristensson calls forth in his other band. No, this is straight-up old school, primitive black metal. Picture the winding coil guitar string manipulations Blasphemer of MAYHEM combined with the diabolic bar chord crunch of DARK THRONE, and GORGOROTH and SATYRICON during their slow moments.
'Doomsdaylight,' the album's introductory track grabs the listener by the jugular vein with scathing sounds, ghostly voices, stabbing noises, and cries of pain. This scary intro leads into a tough-as-nails, mid-tempo bar chord massacre. Although the next track, 'Bleed your Wounds' begins with a dark piano passage, the rest of the track remains at the same mid-paced tempo of the last track. 'Seasons of Mortality' is a much needed dose of black metal speed. From the disharmonic tremolo guitar notes to the cymbal work and drum rolls, everything about this track screams out MAYHEM—De Mysteriious Dom Sathanis. With the addition of wraithlike keyboard notes for atmosphere, These Swedes have composed easily the best track on the album.
RUTTHNA plays their mid-tempo brand of black metal with conviction. Stockholm's Deadbeat studio did a competent job recording the album. The Swedish duo's instruments are mixed at the right level, making the music heavy and recognizable. Kristensson achieves a very disturbing tone to his vocals, at times sounding like a dying man. Keyboards add a touch of evil atmosphere to the whole album. The major problem facing this release is the lack of tempo. At moments, it seems like all hell is about to break loose and the Swedes will emulate fellow countrymen MARDUK in speed. That never happens, and the album drags along at half-speed. Fans of medium pace black metal like some of DARK THRONE's material, KHOLD, and older SAMAEL might worship the discs one-dimensional dirge. For those who worship the hyper-blasting of IMMORTAL, MARDUK, and DARK FUNERAL you are better off overlooking this release.
